Women who wanted to tell their stories of victimization or that of a loved one, were often reluctant to come forward and testify at the public hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. There were many reasons for this, the least of which was that they felt that their suffering was not as important as the suffering of their husbands, sons and fathers who were active in the struggle for liberation.
